Further Phase 4 development of Argyle Alternative High School’s Outdoor Educational Classroom. Funding for the purchase of the Hydroponic System, nutrients and seeds was provided by the North End Community Renewal Corporation (NECRC). The Hydroponic system is being used to experiment with plants that may be placed or grown in the Outdoor Educational Classroom. The system is also being used as an educational resource.

Hydroponic System

Lemon Basil (planted on December 12, 2006): The strong lemon scent contained within the leaves adds zest to fish dishes, soups and salads. This plant grows to 40 cm (16”) high.

Dark Opal Basil (planted on December 12, 2006): This annual herb with its fine flavour and aroma is excellent for seasoning or for use in vinegars. Grows to 60 cm (24”) tall.

Peppermint (planted on December 12, 2006): This perennial herb is also known as candymint. Used in tall drinks, mint jelly, and sauces. An absolute favourite for peppermint tea. Grows to 60 cm (24”) tall.

Strawberries (planted on December 12, 2006): Produces lots of sweet and juicy fruit from summer to frost. Perfect for freezing. Prefers well drained soil. Maturity: 75 days.
